The Real EFL understands that Birmingham City is trying to sabotage Huddersfield Town’s attempt to sign Antony Evans.
Birmingham City will be seeking an early promotion after being demoted to the third division on the last day of the Championship season. The Blues will be playing in League One for the first time since the Football League’s inception in the 2004–05 season.
As a result, they’re one of the favourites for the title in what could be a rather open renewal of the third division. There’s plenty to like about the appointment of up-and-coming manager Chris Davies, and even more to like about their transfer business so far this window.
On Tuesday evening, the club would announce the signing of last season’s League One top goalscorer Alfie May in what is a clear statement of intent ahead of the forthcoming season. Although it will be the striker who grabs the headlines, the signing of Burnley goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell further emphasises the direction that the club want to go in.
Both can be described as marquee signings and in turn certainly give their fellow promotion-chasers something to think about. The Blues are far from done just yet and may well beat direct promotion rivals to yet another signing.
Sources have informed The Real EFL that the club are attempting to hijack fellow relegated side Huddersfield Town’s bid to sign Bristol Rovers midfielder Antony Evans.
More than proven in the EFL already, Evans has put together a string of strong seasons for the Gas. After a standout year during the 2021/22 season, where Rovers would gain promotion to the third tier, Evans has taken the step-up in his stride and is yet to reach his ceiling.
With six goals and six assists last season from midfield for a mid-table side, the 25-year-old could well take his level up a notch with a side chasing automatic promotion. Both Birmingham and Huddersfield will have the same ambition for next season, a return to the Championship at the first time of asking.
Birmingham’s business so far in the window may be enough to tempt Evans however, and the midfielder could thrive at St Andrew’s.
Birmingham have already shown that they are not afraid to splash the cash this window, offering Alfie May a mega deal. With Evans valued by Transfermarkt at around the £500,000 mark, if they put their money on the table, then they could well convince the midfielder to join them rather than their promotion rivals.
A move to either would represent a step-up for the 25-year-old but after coping with the class of League One over the last two seasons, he has proven himself effective at the level. If he is to join the Blues, then their claims as favourites for the League One title will be further enhanced and there’s plenty of hope amongst the fanbase that those claims could come to fruition.
