After the Euro 2024 final, England’s manager Gareth Southgate resigned, and the FA is now searching for a new permanent manager as well as a temporary one for the forthcoming fixtures.
Lee Carsley, a former midfielder for Birmingham City, is set to take over as England’s acting manager for their September Nations League games.
Following England’s defeat by Spain in the Euro 2024 final, Gareth Southgate resigned from his position, and the FA is actively searching for his replacement. Since Southgate’s departure, a number of names have been tossed into the hat, including Eddie Howe and Graham Potter.
While Potter, the former Chelsea manager, is still unemployed, Howe is still with Newcastle United. Carsley, the manager of the Under-21 team, will take temporary charge of the Three Lions while the FA decide on the best candidate to guide the team going forward.
Carsley, a former star player for St Andrew’s, made almost 50 appearances and briefly served as interim manager.
In September, England will play Nations League matches against Finland and the Republic of Ireland. Carsley may be asked to manage the senior team, as first reported by The Telegraph. This would put him up against the country he played for forty times, according to the Mirror.
Carsley entered the FA system in 2020 as the under-20s head coach before getting promoted, and he has been in charge of the Under-21s since 2021.
He led the under-21 team, which included senior stars Anthony Gordon and Cole Palmer, to victory in the Euros last summer. Harvey Elliott of Liverpool, one of his former teammates, has already endorsed Carsley.
The midfield player said, “Absolutely,” expressing his complete trust in the coach. Lee is a fantastic manager as well as a fantastic person. He’s prepared to take the lead. Many major teams have expressed interest in him, which speaks well of him and his coaching.”
