July 22, 2024, in San Antonio Sofiane Djeffal, a midfielder, has joined San Antonio FC, subject to league and federation approval. The deal’s terms were not revealed in accordance with team policy.
“As a center midfielder with a winning mentality and high standards, Sofiane is a box-to-box player,” stated SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. We are excited to incorporate him into the team as soon as possible because of his expertise on both sides of the ball.
Djeffal most recently played for Orange County SC, a USL Championship team, where he played 882 minutes and scored the game-winning goal against FC Tulsa. He played for MLS team Austin FC before moving to Orange County. He made nine appearances in all competitions during the 2023 season, including one start for the team in the Concacaf Champions League. After being selected by D.C. United with the 36th overall choice in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft, Djeffal started his professional career in 2022. He made 28 total appearances and led the team in interceptions, blocks, and tackles.
Djeffal excelled in college at Oregon State University before turning pro, recording 20 goals and 21 assists in 66 games. The Frenchman was crowned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2018 and was selected to the Pac-12 All-Conference First Team four times in a row. During his senior year, he was voted the 2021 Pac-12 Player of the Year and a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy.
On July 27, San Antonio FC will travel to play Memphis 901 FC. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. CT and will be televised on Bally Sports Southwest and ESPN+. Toyota is the presenter of this season.
