Boston — — The MLB-leading New York Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox 8-1 on Friday night, led by Luis Gil’s six strikeouts. Alex Verdugo had a two-run home run and four RBI in his return to Fenway Park.
Before being dealt to New York in December in an unusual move between the AL East division rivals, Verdugo played for the Red Sox for four seasons.

Anthony Volpe opened the fifth inning with a single, and the Yankees quickly added two more runs. Aaron Judge walked with one out after that. Judge moved to third and Volpe scored thanks to Verdugo’s double. Giancarlo Stanton’s strikeout ended Bello’s outing. Left-hander Cam Booser took his place, giving up a run-scoring single to Rizzo.
Regarding Bello’s performance, Red Sox manager Alex Cora remarked, “We were talking about getting ahead, stay ahead.” “I don’t believe that to be true. He was trailing nine batters when, I believe, six or seven of them managed to reach base. We need to be more aggressive in the strike zone because of their strong offense.
Bello (6-4) pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up six hits, three walks, and five strikeouts while allowing five earned runs to be scored.
Bello remarked, “I think the start was going well and I got out of rhythm.” “I believe that was the key—they were hitting the ball in the crucial moments.”
Jose Trevino, the ninth-ranked hitter for the Yankees, smashed his seventh home run of the year in the ninth inning against right-hander Chase Anderson. Soto walked with two outs, and Judge’s double brought him in. Judge was scored by Verdugo’s single that came next.
Victor González, Michael Tonkin, Tommy Kahnle, and Caleb Ferguson, all of whom are relievers for New York, combined to pitch four scoreless innings and record eight strikeouts. Ferguson got all four batters he faced to strike out.
Rafael Devers and Masataka Yoshida were both given successive walks by Gil to start the fourth inning, which resulted in Boston’s run. On Enmanual Valdez’s double, Devers scored.
