North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball have strengthened their revamped frontcourt with another major international addition, landing 7-foot center Sayon Keita from the FC Barcelona development system, according to multiple reports.
Keita has been competing with FC Barcelona’s U22 squad in Spain’s developmental league while also earning limited appearances with the senior team. His commitment gives head coach Michael Malone another key interior piece as UNC continues reshaping its roster for the 2026–27 season.
First reported by DraftExpress, Keita is expected to take on the center role immediately, joining fellow portal additions Cade Bennerman (Northwestern) and Maxim Logue (Florida Atlantic) in the revamped rotation. The Tar Heels also retain forward Jarin Stevenson, while freshman Maximo Adams remains committed to the program.
Originally from Bamako, Mali, Keita moved to Spain four years ago to join Barcelona’s youth system and has since developed into one of the most promising young big men in international basketball. He has already made his debut in Spain’s top professional league and has split time between the senior squad and the U22 program.
At the U22 level, he has averaged 8.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game, showcasing strong defensive instincts and interior presence. His profile has continued to rise following standout performances at major showcases such as the NBPA Top 100 Camp and the NBA Academy Games.
Scouts widely view Keita as a long-term project with significant upside, especially due to his size, mobility, and shot-blocking ability. While still developing offensively, he is regarded as one of the most promising frontcourt additions in Malone’s early roster rebuild at UNC.
